Start the 150th Anniversary of the War at an original site!

Historic Fort Wayne, The 5th Michigan Volunteer Infantry (Saginaw City Light Guard) and the Sally Port Mess are Hosting the:

2011 Combined Arms Drill

ALL Branches are invited to attend.

Event to be held at Historic Fort Wayne in Detroit, Michigan. This Fort was built in 1848 on the banks of the Detroit River. It served as a Camp of Instruction for nearly every Michigan unit mustered in during the war.

Sleep where the slept, drill where they drilled, eat what they ate.

This is a truly rare experience and one that will be an excellent opportunity to begin your quest through the 150's.

This year there will be several historic experiences for the participants. That will cut down a little the amount of drill, but we feel you will get a much richer experience.
Join us to:

•Be part of a regiment mustered into service

•Visit a Post sutler who will have wares for sale

•Saturday supper will be available for those who register ahead. This will be a period meal served as documented in a letter written by a member of the
8th Michigan Volunteer Infantry During his COI

•Enjoy period Saturday evening entertainment

• Marty Bertera, period photographer will be onsite--Get your image struck

Our goal for this start of the 150's is 100 infantrymen. Help us get enough men to drill with a regulation, early war company!

Come to this one and you will be drilling, sleeping, ect right where the men of the 1st Michigan (3 months) were 150 years ago. Actually, you will be there on the 150th anniversary of their arrival to the Fort. Much of the star fort and 1848 barracks is all original. You would be touching the same banister while walking on the same wood floor!!

Since we can not give a cash bounty for enlistment I will sweeten it up another way. The company that has the most men will have 3 pies waiting for them! For all the company's, for each 5 men the Capatin's have coming will be worth a can of peaches.

Company H (Ypsilanti Light Guard ) - Captain, JR Schroeder - 21st MI, 7th MI
Company E (Steuben Guard) - Captain, Doug Nosbich - 17th MI, 15th MI
Company K (Hardee Cadets) - Captain, Tom Steele - Adjunct Company

March 16, 1861

"An act was approved by the governor which authorized him "to accept and muster into the military service of the state" two regiments of militia composed of ten companies each for terms of no less than three months or more than three years. The purpose of the act, passed by the House on March 12 by a vote of 55-to-19 vote and the by the Senate on March 13 by a vote of 25 to 1, was to place Michigan in a state of readiness to answer the call of the federal government for aid in preserving the union from actions of the seceding states, "by which open rebellion and a state of war actually exists."

But no funds were provided to pay the troops when they were mustered in or to pay for their clothing, equipment, food or training.
