View Full Version : Manners? Signature line

I have a question regarding the use of quotes in signature lines when members post here. I know that the provost, or the provost's computer censors some words, but are those words or similar usages allowed in the signature lines?

My question arises from the signature used by John1862. He uses an unattributed quote in which a word that might be found objectionable is used. Now, I normally don't have a problem with coarse language, in the right circumstances, but I don't believe that simply because it's a supposed quote from A. Lincoln that it is appropriate for use here. The forum guidelines mentioned in the "Manners" thread indicate that profanity is not acceptable here. He has been using this quote apparently since he first joined the forum, and I guess no one has complained.

May I suggest that people who use quotes in this fashion at least give some mention of who said it, and when?

Also, I'd like to suggest that anyone who uses a quote look it up and get it right. There is someone, I can't recall who, using an almost correct quote of Stonewall Jackson's last words: "Let us cross over the river, and rest in the shade of the trees." p. 446, "They Called Him Stonewall" by Burke Davis. The version being used in a signature line here barely matches this.

Thanks,
Frank Brower

To be honest, I had not really noticed prior to your raising the issue here. As for as the automatic filters, I am not sure that they are in operation. We really do rely on your Alerts to help us find things like this.

Sorry...I thought the filter would have gotten it, and if it didnt then I would assume it wasnt a problem

I got the quote from a page by Jonah Begone...... http://wesclark.com/jw/porta.html
The quote being from "The Fine Art of Political Wit" by Leon G Harris, I just couldnt fit that in my sig. line, it said I had too much in there already

Actually, I found it funny. It's also a reminder (at least to me) of Mr. Lincoln's outhouse style of humor, which adds a human touch to a man and President held in rather high esteem by us today.

High esteem today, but not necessarily at the time, although the respect grew for him as the war went on. His untimely death served to deify him to posterity.

I also found it amusing, and being a quote, found no reason for offense.

I did not find it offensive either. Crapping is a normal bodily fuction and having a remark like that come from a Commander in Chief about one of his generals would have earned my respect.

If it is real quote it is rather humerous, but could be seen as offensive; especially to McClellan. Of course there is a ring of truth about it. ;-)

I concur with Bernard. Though, maybe we should post more quotes by "important" figures, LOL.

As I said, I'm not opposed to coarse language, in the right circumstances. I find it an amusing anecdote, also. But it's the sort of thing that is clever and amusing the first few times you see it, then it just gets old.

How about changing these things out sometime? Find us a new one, perhaps something relevant to the topic being discussed, instead of just the same old bit over, and over, and over.

What I hate is the sig lines with things that other's have said on the board.

They are usually used for meanness sake alone.
