Saturday:

The first scenario depicts the actions on the left of the Confederate line near the Railroad Cut. We will be depicting the fight where Union troops momentarily break through the Confederate defenses, but are eventually driven from the field by strong reinforcements. The Railroad Cut was a significant part of the Battle of 2nd Manassas, and will be very key to our weekend.

The engagement will be taking place on an authentic 1850's railroad cut left on the property. A lot of work has been done to update the property to bring it back to 1862.

The evening action will re-create the opening shots of the battle: The Engagement at Brawner's Farm. Federal troops under Gibbon and Doubleday will advance down the re-created "Warrenton Turnpike," all the while being observed by Jackson and his lone battery. When the battery opens up, the Federals are caught off guard. They reorganize and advance in an attempt to take the unsupported guns. At this moment, Jackson's men crest the ridge and the fighting begins. As the Confederates push forward, Doubleday sends two regiments up to fill a gap left between the 7th and 2nd Wisconsin. The fight is brutal at distances of less than 100 yards and casualties are high. Both sides devastate each other till dusk turns to nightfall and the two armies retire. The fight is a draw, and becomes the first baptism of the "Iron Brigade."

The land owner has graciously spent his time and energy to provide us with an accurate layout of the terrain for Brawner's Farm. Compared to the original battlefield, its is spot on down to scale.

Sunday:

The final scenario of the weekend will be the fight on Chinn Ridge. The engagement will commence with the destruction of the 5th NY zouaves. In a costly 10 minute stretch, the 5th NY loses around 200 men. Hood's Texans sweep over the ridges and, with support now on their right, continue to roll over anyone who opposes. The 26th NY will attempt to make a stand, but will also be crushed by the gray tide. It is an overwhelming victory for Lee, and ends the battle for Pope and his army.

This portion of the reenactment will take place on the northern fields of the property, which bear a strong resemblance to the actual ridges on the battlefield.

One thing I like about events with which Chris Anders is associated -- and I know many other people are contributing! -- is that there is actually some sort of a script, and sometimes, on special occasions, it is even communicated down to the company level, so we know when, where, and how severely, to take hits.

I am already starting to practice my falls...

I've been looking forward to this for a year now. The 26th New York is my baby. I'm just wondering if it's wrong to put so much effort into building something just to watch it be wrecked... Incidentally, if anyone plans on coming out with our battalion, LET US KNOW! Fate cards and rations and overall quality depend on who and what plans to join us. Thanks. Bill Birney Qmt. Sgt., 26th NYSV

Yep Bill, you've put a lot of work into the adjunct. Hopefully it all works according to plan. Just let us know if there is anything else you guys need.

Dave,
I appreciate you all giving us this opportunity. Second Bull Run in real time for the recreated 26th! The history's going to rock some worlds next weekend. Reading the accounts, I believe any AARs written by our people will mirror the history rather well. Col. Richardson(Owens), Major Jennings(Parvis), Adj. Bacon(Lloyd), and Joe Caridi did their fair share. Hopefully, our boys will find it worthwhile. I'm all fired up! Thanks.
