One of the black guys I work with found out I was into reenacting so he asked me to bring in my shell. So I took it in to work one night. Nothin fancy a richmond 2 grey wool with blue piping I got on ebay for 30 bucks. His eyes got all big and he offered to buy it on the spot talkin about how cool it was. It was my only shell at the time so I didn't sell. He wants me to find him one now be it yankee rebel artillery etc. I asked him if he understood what people think the grey means and he said people need to get out of the past and get over it slavery was everywhere not just the south and no blacks in the us are or have ever been slaves that are around now. I love talkin with educated people.

There are several black teachers at the school where I work who have attended some of the events I've been at. When school is let out for the day we have had some good discussions, including the inevitable one about slavery. Since I play both sides, I had perspectives from varying viewpoints. They realize that it was a century and a half ago and times have changed since then. I guess we somewhat feel akin since the Irish and the Germans weren't all that well thought of back then either. As one of my teacher friends said to me "We might not have an unblemished history, but at least we have the freedom to look back at it."

Tread carefully here gentlemen.

We recognize our history and do have the freedom to do so.

Still, slavery DOES continue in the world today. Occasionally, ones manage to escape that condition and take refugue in our great country. People live and work here today who have been slaves and know that condition all too well.
