Besides whiskey as a stimulant. What other kinds of "stimulants" were used?

Let me see...
Other forms of alcohol (brandy, etc.)
Ammonia
Cantharides
Ginger
Turpentine
Capsicum
Arnica
Pennyroyal
Plus lots of others, each used in different ways for different purposes. Here's (http://books.google.com/books?id=H75YAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA146&vq=stimulants&output=html) a good chapter. The stimulating effects of coffee and tea of course were recognized too, though not usually included among the medical options. Camphor and opium (http://books.google.com/books?id=TOYRAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA374&dq=opium+camphor+stimulant&output=html&cd=3) were also considered to have some stimulant effects at first, before acting as narcotics.
