For those who were there and any who are interested, the local paper covered the event at Appomattox over the weekend:

http://www2.newsadvance.com/lna/news/local/article/re-enactment_an_emotional_one_for_145th_anniversary_o f_surrender_at_appomat/26223/

It was a great event--small, but well run and fairly well attended. Hope they do it again when the 150th surrender anniversary comes around.

Anyone have any pictures to share?

Sorry, I posted, but this was the one at the Actual Court house. We weren't at that ceremony, which was only on Sat.

We were at the one at Clover Hill Village about a mile away from the court house. We had an event starting Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon. We had school kids there Friday and the general public all 3 days..
We had the Federal Generals Corps and Lee's Lieutenants in attendance at the event we did.

I have some and if I get a chance will post them. Of course those of us who were in Union blue were out-numbered, but that was expected anyway. Even with the rain and wind Thursday evening/night, it turned out to be a good little event.

Some coverage about the guys who marched from Saylor's Creek to Appomattox Courthouse - and who rose $3,000 to preserve a Confederate flag - would have been good, too.

I'm sorry to hear that your preservation march did not receive any media coverage--it sounds like you were successful in raising a substantial amount of money for a good cause. I've also participated in preservation activities that were not covered by the media, including a preservation march for the S. Mountain battlefield just last year. It's unfortunate when that happens, but I'm also grateful for media coverage of any history related event, regardless of how modest. For things like preservation marches, a fair amount of pre-event publicity is probably necessary to secure a media presence, but even that is no guarantee that they will actually show up.

Well, Woodreb I was feeling sorry for you guys cause the story was you had been ignored, but now I'm jealous! I'd say you did pretty good in the media coverage dept. :D

Here's a picture of the 3rd US sent in by Dan Fulton of the 88th NY, taken by a family member of someone in his unit. You can see what extraordinary weather we had for the event.

WVIR, Ch. 29 in Charlottesville covered the story as well. I have no link but you can Google it.

Claude,
Matt Utt and Bryan Beard of the 24th Virginia/New River Rifles did a lot of the media contact and logistical organizing for the march, and did a fine job at both. The evening meals arranged by the unit, and provided by the gracious and good people of Virginia, were more than ample for the each day. I should say that as I am not a member of their unit, if I have left out others in their unit who also helped organize this preservation march, I apologize. The fund raising continues for this flag: http://www.24thva.com/
