ohio buttons

I have recently purchased several Ohio state seal buttons. My question is when, how, and where would these have been used. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Worn by militia.

They are very scarce and would not have been commonly available after the war started. CW BM are Steele & Johnson, Extra Quality and Waterbury Button Co / Extra.
