Perhaps some of you Kentucky folks can help me with this.

My great grandfather was discharged from a Kentucky unit in Cloverport, KY in April of 1865. I remember seeing his discharge papers (they're gone now; a sad story) which listed him as being in the Green River Regiment. There was no numerical designation on the papers. His company commander was Capt. A. Moose (great name huh?)

If I remember correctly, the papers were not issued by the state of Kentucky but I could be wrong. I have always had the impression they were Federal papers but memory may not serve me well on that.

Incidentally, his name was John White. I have found several John Whites on KY rosters but none that have the discharge place and date the same as what was on that paper.

I have looked everywhere I can think of to try and match this outfit up with a better more solid identification.

I can find no "Green River Regiment" title associated with any numbered KY unit in Federal service. Could it have been some type of Home Guard unit? I have found lists of such units but, once again, none with the title in question associated with it - at least on the lists I've seen.

Any help given would be very much appreciated.

Sir,
If you know the COUNTY where your ancestor was from it would probably help solve the puzzle. The Green River stretches for 300 miles in Ky and several counties. If you do not know the county he was from, write down the counties in which the river passes thru and search those county records for either/both John White and A. Moose.
Sounds like an early war home guard unit that may have been incorporated into a Ky regiment. Or it could be a home guard unit from later in the war to handle guerilla raids which took place frequently in Ky.
good luck with your research and let me know if you need some help,
ew taylor

There was a unit from Greensburg I think 2 or 5th Ky that called themselves the Greensburg Guards, they where a Confederate unit, My family is from Green and Adair counties here in Kentucky with Green River running through them, like the early post said Green River runs a long way in this state. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Since he was discharged in 1865, I am thinking he was in a late war unit. I posted the same thing on the AC forum and a couple folks told me there was a home guard unit called the Green River battalion. That's pretty close to what I remember being on his discharge papers.

He's a mysterious fellow this ancestor of mine - very hard to pin down.

Sir,
John Jackman's book might be able to help.I believe it's called "Diary of a Confederate Soldier:John S. Jackman of the Orphan Brigade".He has a lot of info in there, especially from early war.He talks of his little force that was camped at Camp Charity marching down the Green River to get to Bowling Green.I'll have to check the references, but he might have mentioned that particular unit in his diary. It was printed by the University of South Carolina Press back in '92.His journal might be able to help you some.
