I'm looking for a few good men and women who are willing to come to a living history in May's Landing NJ to reach out to high school students and bring the Civil War to life for them.

Will you help?

Read about the budget cuts to schools, museums, lay offs for battlefield and museum staff? Historic sites and houses closing their doors? I feel that all of this is going to make it less likely that students will be entranced by history as so many of us were when we were school children.

I can't fully fund all the things I'd like to keep open. But I do believe that individual people, who are willing to step up can make a big difference. Do you believe that, too?

I remember many of the museum professionals and reenactors I met growing up. I know how the stories they told set me on fire about the Civil War. Many of you do living history with your local schools and parks. You know what it's like when you look in their eyes and watch them light up.

Jim Dunn, a young history teacher (and a new reenactor) in May's Landing, NJ has gotten permission to host the first living history in his high school. He's gotten permission to have a living history on May 21. It's a Friday, and a work day.

Jim went to all the meetings and got clearance with the school board, local police, fire, forestry department, and even the Atlantic County Prosecutor's office. Reenactors can bring guns, edged weapons, bayonets, just no projectiles and no loaded weapons.

The school agreed to let people camp overnight and have camp fires on school grounds.

Now he needs reenactors.

I'm going. Will you join me?

People can stay overnight or can come that morning or at lunch time or at any point through the day.

It's 2010, times are tough.

Each of us can make a difference, one day at a time.
Make a difference on one day, in one school. Come on May 21st.

I believe I'm duty-bound to show up, since Mays Landing is where ggf Torpes, 7th NJVI, was from. Sounds like fun.

What the heck, might as well make it three Bills! :)

My understanding is he needs Cornfeds.

Dear Bill:

He's happy to have each and every volunteer, glad to have you aboard!

Don't know what the two other Bills are going to portray, though I know from experience that Bill Watson can "turn his coat to suit his opportunities!"

If you'd prefer to tell the Southern side of the story, so much the better, happy to have you!

Looking forward!

Which high school? He might be from Mays Landing, but there's a boatload of high schools nearby: Oakcrest, Mainland, Holy Spirit, Hammonton and probably a bunch since I moved away 20 years ago.

Dear Bill:

It's Oakcrest High School.

Joe:

Great to have you along as well! We've got a really good bunch coming together for this one!

Ms. Karin,
You can count my wife and I in for the cause. So it looks like 4 Bills...and like the QM here comes another Reb. Hey after all it is South Jersey.

Dear Mr. Coe:

You're very welcome indeed, Sir!

Between you and Bill Rodman, I'm quite confident that we've got a solid base to present the Southn side of the Late Unpleasantness!

Mrs. Coe is especially welcome, as she and I can start to work on how to get across some information on the civilian side of things.

Thank you both for being willing to join us,

Folks:

Again, thanks to all who have volunteered so far!

I'm putting together an email with all the basic information about this event for those who are coming. I'd like to include email addresses for everyone who has committed so far, and I've gathered most of them.

I need an email for Bill Watson, and would appreciate it if someone (Bill?) could send it to me at ktimour@aol.com.

Thanks!
