Is there any evidence of bass drum heads being lettered with a group's name or painted with a design or insignia during the Civil War?

The surviving military bass drums I have seen all had calfskin heads and utilized no mufflers, and most were played using wooden beaters wound with string and covered with buckskin. They seldom had any lettering. If you are concerned with having a drum that looks and sounds like the ones used 150 years ago, focus on obtaining or fitting your drum with these features.

A 36" piece of calfskin is $44.93

Compare this to plastic at $46.50

Here is a Picture of the Elmira Cornet Band. As you can see, their bass drum has their name written on it. Hope this helps sir!

Don,

Good to hear from you! Thanks for the image. We just picked up a Cooperman bass drum in excellent condition for the Mifflin Guard Field Music. Are you planning on going to the Allaire camp of instruction on April 10-11? How about Neshaminy?

This is a civilian band, right? Other famous bands such as Dodworth's and Gilmore's probably would have had their names on their bass drums also. But it appears that it wasn't common to have markings such as XXth Penn. or XXnd NY as the surviving bass drums do not usually have any markings.

Here's the 7th Mississippi bass drum...a rare specimen indeed.

Has anyone else seen a regimental marking on a military bass drum?

Interesting to see how narrow this bass drum is compared to others seen in photos. Some drums really looked enormous! We will probably forego any lettering on our drum which is 26" (head) x 20" width.
