Carole, This isn't just a new job but a whole new line of work. I've been selected for our ironworkers locals apprenticeship program...
So I'm very stressed balancing the two and trying to do the right thing........... And its not making me very good company at times, I'm afraid. Take me with a grain of salt and ill be back in good spirits fairly soon (I hope).
I've not been ignoring you, Scott - just watching and waiting for Lizzi and Sam to finish dancing (or sparring...)

Congratulations on being chosen for the apprenticeship! We're all cheering you on!

Major changes ARE stressful, and sometimes the greatest opportunities are the most unsettling. Take good care of yourself and you'll be fine.

A lady, for example, of a kind disposition; the gushing fountain of whose heart sends forth a flood of benevolence and love as warm and free as the balmy breath of spring, who has been so unfortunate as to wed an arch and smiling hypocrite; one who is a total stranger to the noble sentiment of affection and whose heart is frigid as an iceberg; with such anyone, is it possible that she can be happy? In vain she may weep and hope; a dreary region of suffering and sorrow is her portion, till she, broken-hearted, quits her vale of tears for the regions of the blest. Well may we shed a tear of pity over her hard lot; the blighted hopes of her young heart; her living immuration in a nuptial prison; her worse than Hindoo sacrifice.

I've been trying to to get back with you too Scott but as you can read the ladies are all over me....

Been there done that Scott. Going from unit to unit duty station to duty station from different 1SG's and CO's for twenty years was a bummer having to start all over again showing your superiors that I knew what I was trained to do. It was especially hard if the guy before you was a deadbeat but that was the way of the profession. Bite the bullit and drive on...like a trooper.

Since this author denounces FREE LOVE, I doubt he would promote divorce (though a few did). Since the Bible says, "'till death do you part," I'm guessing she was stuck with her poor choice for a husband. This author is trying to teach people how to select a proper life mate through Phrenology - the size of your head, how many lumps it has, the space between your eyes, blah, blah, would help you choose someone "made" for you and would help men and women avoid the mistakes a romantic whim might cause you to make. Science vs. Love.

THOUGHTS ON DOMESTIC LIFE OR MARRIAGE VINDICATED AND FREE LOVE EXPOSED.
BY NELSON SIZER
NEW YORK 1858

PG 6
Very few persons in society voluntarily lead a life of celibacy, and although the surly bachelor may sneer at the idea of matrimony, yet allow me to remark that, if he has chosen that mode of life, from any cause, save his conscious unworthiness of a wife, he has little to expect from me on this occasion. Is he destitute of the common sympathies of our nature? Has he no heart to feel the tender witchery of female charms; or, is it encased in steel, so that Cupid’s dart cannot perforate it; or, is he too indolent, or too miserly to support a wife? He ought to remember that he is indebted to the institution of marriage for a home, even, and a place to lay his head. He is usually a supernumerary in some family where he may, at least, hang up his hat and cane and call it home. But those who advocate a life of celibacy should be regarded by all good citizens, as enemies to one of the best institutions, and to the general well-being of society. With such persons, we have nothing to do, but shall confine our remarks to those, who, having a proper estimate of this relation, are seeking a companion, such as shall divide the sorrows and double the joys of life.

Elizabeth

The apostle Paul would have loved that quote.

Didn't you know that young males have two brains - one in the head and one in the pants- but only enough blood to allow only one of them to function at a time. Unfortunately it also applies to many middle aged men who are "rediscovering their youth" as they become aware of their impending mortality.

And how about the good guys that married evil women?

If unhappy wives were the only dark spots that deface the matrimonial picture, its contemplation were less painful; but, when we find equally unhappy husbands, we would heave a sign for those who are unhappily wedded, and invoke every means in our power to obviate results so unfortunate to the married. He who lavishes his first and best affections upon one who is unworthy of a man of noble and generous feelings, and cannot reciprocate them, finds, when it is too late, that his hopes of connubial bliss are blasted, and a thorn planted in his soul, which, with its festering malignity is corroding his tenderest sensibilities and producing a desolation in his heart, which time, instead of alleviating, will only serve to augment. Intemperance, desertion or suicide are often resorted to, as an imaginary relief; they are wrecked on Scylla in the attempt to avoid Charybdis. It is as a wife that the defects of the female character appear in all their deformity, “and grow upon the disappointed husband like the frightful figures of the magic lantern, increasing in hideousness, as they increase in magnitude and distinctness. It is when the doating lover begins to suspect that the silent calm, which he had hitherto mistaken for maiden shyness, is, in reality, the silence of the soul – the calm of imperturbable stagnation. When he discovers that he has devoted his best affections to a beautiful, but marble statue; when he returns to his home, which ought to be an ever sunny place, and finds nothing but the yawning vacancy of a cold and cheerless void; when he pours his fresh warm feelings that burst in unstudied language from his burning lips upon the stony surface of an insensible heart, and that heart a woman’s – it is then he shrinks back repelled and blasted, as if the blooming charms he once adored, were exchanged for deformity and horror.”

A few nice things, Scot, about wanted e-mails are
1. You don't have to open them
2. You can dump them in the Spam box and keep them there
3. Repeated unwanted e-mails are a form of harrassment - I know someone who spent 2 years in jail for doing that

On the subject of charming the ladies, I was going to make a post on a new thread with a poll about racism in reenacting. I really haven't experience racism but I have experienced predjudice and bigotry due to my age. Most comments and shrug offs come from the young ladies. Most invites for me come from ladies that actually look like they are really from the 19th century. It's a bad case pf Boomeritis. Isn't it getting a bit cold for a toga?

A German Army base outside of Munich, November, 1985.....A bunch of agent's from the USAF Office of Special Investigations and a few other agencies attend a two week-long course in undercover operations. Finding things a tad boring after class, they decide to have a toga party Friday night. Extra sheets from the billeting office supply are "procured" and everyone is required to be in toga attire to attend. We had toga dance contests, best men's legs contest (judged by the ladies, of course), and our guest of honor was an instructor who's credentials included a professorship at a Pa. college (he had a red blanket for a toga adorned with various volks-marching medallions to give him that "Caesar" look). The only thing missing was a Roman bath!!!!!! Word spread so well that the German base commander showed up....but was politely refused permission to enter by our "enforcer" until he donned a toga.......which he gladly did!! There were Centurions, Senators, and Maidens, all of which imbibed in festivities and drink. We started out with about 25 attendee's, but ended up with 100+.....I have no idea where the others came from, but there were strange tongues being spoken there.......

What a freakin party!!!!!!! Boy, did my head hurt the next day...

Breakfast sounds delightful - if you won't mind getting up at 4:30 am  lunch might work out better...and there is no such thing as too much laughter! That would mean there's such a thing as too much fun, and I'll defer to Songbird's opinion on the matter :p Besides, we can always ask the stare-ers to join us in wreaking havoc hehe

As for location, I'll defer to the lady with more experience, my culinary palatte is rather limited to campus food, whatever I mess up in my kitchen, and soldier's cooking (in no particular order of edibility, of course).

Hey, thanks Margaret!!! It's so nice to be with someone who is really interested in the hobby!:D Are you going to the Harper's Ferry thing? I loved Haper's Ferry when we visited years ago...boy it was a long time ago, I think back in 1986!!!!! Well, maybe someday I'll make it back out there. Take care and have fun. Hope you find some cool events to attend.

Margaret,
Here is some information on a local event that may be pretty close to you. It is put on by the 47th Va and the 28th Mass. co. B. The 28th Mass is a top notch organization. The following is a thread from a member of the 47th Va. with information about the event.
Hope this helps.

My name is Eric Powell and I'm the organizer of the Fredericksburg Event. I want to begin with an apology for the lack of information this year. In addition to working with new people in the city every year, we're changing things around a bit. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can here. I hope to have the web site up this week, so keep an eye on www.47thva.org before heading to Cedar Creek.

To begin with, we are hoping to change this to more of a living history event than a reenactment. There just isn't room in the city for the 400 reenactors we had last year. Real safety concerns arose and made us decide to scale things back dramatically. We can pull off our plans this year with about 100 reenactors or so. The scenario is "What happened in the city between the street fight and the main assault". We will begin with a small street skirmish of selected units to portray the street fight and then the Union will "occupy the town". This fight and the Union Camp will be on Charles Street. We plan to establish HQ, field hospitals, a period telegraph, and pickets along this street as well. We are looking for units to help portray activities that would have occured in town during the occupation. I even have some home owners willing to help with a looting scene. Civilian impressions interacting with the Federals would be great here.

After the skirmish, Confederates will withdraw to the mall along Washington Avenue to portary camps "outside of the city". There will also be field hospitals, HQ, pickets, and period music by the Camptown Shakers. I would like a couple of units to do a rounders game with spectator particpation further down the mall. Blue v. Gray maybe? This is where registration will be Saturday morning and reenactor parking will be down the street at the First Christian Church.

In between the two camps will not only be the field hospitals, but also some pockets of remaining Confederates that will need to be rooted out by Federal patrols. These groups will be selected and prepared in advance. A lot of this may happen along Prince Edward Street. Units interested in possibly helping with this need to have previous Fredericksburg experience and contact me immediately. While we don't need as many numbers as we had in the past, we do want enough reenactors to come to make our impression meaningful and allow those on picket, ambulance, or other duty to be relieved to get some lunch in town.

On Sunday, the National Park Service and 28th Mass. Co. B take the lead. Frank O'Reilly hosts a wonderful walking tour of the Irish Brigade's march through town from 12-2pm. Units participating, and those wishing to walk along, form up at the city dock on Sophia Street. The tour concludes at the Kirkland Memorial and leads into the Commemoration Service with units from both sides, as well as other organizations. There will be an opportunity to lay wreaths at the end of the ceremony. Contact the NPS if you would like to be placed on the schedule. We would love to have more units participate in this ceremony and honor those that fought in our city 144 years ago. Confederates will form up along Sunken Road at 1pm.

Regarding the cars, spectators, and other logistical concerns. I apologize for any past issues people might have had. While the city does support our efforts, I would not say it is with open arms. They are supportive, but tentatively. We work mostly with the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. (HFFI) and their Candlelight Tour. Our event moves every year to which ever neighborhood they are holding the tour. That is the only way we are able to get some of the streets closed. Without their help, Im not sure we could get any streets closed. For the past few years the director of the HFFI tour has changed, including again this year. This is part of the delay in getting things put together. However, the woman in charge understands our concerns and is working with us to resolve them. The new head of HFFI is a Revolutionary War reenactor. He understands the issues we are facing and is really excited about what we have planned. They have assured me that there will be no cars and that the spectators will be kept at a safe distance from any firing. HFFI is providing portajohns near each camp, there will be fires in designated raised fire pits, water available, BUT there will NOT be any overnight camping this year. However, we do have discounts at the Best Western and Hylton Hotels for reenactors. I'll get maps and information up on the web site as quick as I can.

Fredericksburg is a unique event. It is NOT a powder burner! We hope to provide a one of a kind experience to reenactors free of charge, teach the community about what happened here 144 years ago, and honor those on both sides who struggled through the times. I think that as we develop this into a living history event, it will receive more support and cooperation from the various groups in the community. We hope you'll find it a nice way to end your reenacting season.

If you have questions, are interested in participating, or have a special living history idea that you'd like to bring, please contact me. My email is EPow47@aol.com and my home phone is 540-850-3025.

I would love to have some cookies for my birthday but unless they are made from raw oyster compound and sprinkled with Viagra chunks and bits they won't help this old worn out Lover of the Zodiac. :( :(

I think you need to clarify that statement, Scott!
The cookies you and your unit received were made with milk chocolate chips and pecans, not raw oysters and... YUCK!
I use only the finest, freshest, natural, and period-correct ;) ingredients...

Yes, there were no oysters or Viagra chunks present in those cookies (good thing, considering some of the things that happened to a couple of our members that I'll not go into here...) only all natural goodness.
