Justin,
To do an authentic bluewater confederate sailor would be a stretch. Why not go with the crew of a western gunboat such as the Arkansas or one of the rams at the Memphis action, the Atlanta at Mobile Bay, The sailors at Saylor Creek and Drewrys Bluff would be a great naval infantry option. There are a number of USNLP sailors in the Indiana, Tenn, Illinois,Michigan area.

That is the primary direction we are taking this. We are working on a blue water event in the next few years, but more to come on that. Thank you though for the suggestions!

I was wondering if that boat of yours Justin was going to push you in a nautical direction. I'm game for some travel for a quality navy experience.

Will definitely be up in Mobile for that one. As far as Justin's boat, I'm talking about his modern one, but sooner or later it gets in your blood and you have to get old timey nautical....

Been there done that Ross. Spent 15 years in Uncle's Navy then learned to sail. Went from skiff's to 30 ft sail back to gunning skiffs. I will miss the Mobile event but will attend the Fort Knox Maine event. A couple topsail schooners and an amphibious assaul on the stone fort and the town of Bucksport across from it.

Bob,
At 6' and 290 pounds I wouldn't be accepted with any authentic unit. Now if I had your stature ;) Of course one combat cruise would take me down to fighting trim again esp in one of those engine rooms LOL.

George, I wouldn't say you wouldn't be accepted. My infantry unit has several bigger framed gents and they are some of the most accurate and well educated living historians I know. Not everyone in the War was tiny like most people think. Being part of an "authentic" unit (none of us are authentic as we didn't fight in the War) is the attitude. Less is more. Correctly made items, made from documentation and examination of original items, i.e. clothing, leather items, tinware, etc. Anyone can be "authentic", but not if they don't want to be. It takes hard work, research and determination to attempt to be top notch.

George, I'm with this mess, and your stuff fits me:cool: You know more about Naval ordenance than any one I know. You rae the Navy Gun Guru I know I can always count on you to pull me out of a deep weapons hole I've gotten myself into. Besides, there were lots of (as I like to refer to myself) "Old Fat Sailors" during the CW.

Steve, you're not Old or Fat... just Seasoned and Well-Fed.
Justin, Good Luck with your endeavor. When those handfull of references for a few Marines come up in an event plan let me know and I'll help you find a few...

Peter,
Do you know of a good source for the 1859 Fatigue Shirt?
Thanks,

Peter,
Do you know of a good source for the 1859 Fatigue Shirt?
Thanks,
Joe Blunt of Carter & Jasper/J. Blunt Clothiers (mudcatsgt@earthlink.net), or probably Pete if he feels like threading a needle....

Galen,
Do you mean the Fatigue Sack in Blue Flannel authorized for shipboard use...

I know the Quartermaster Shop makes them...

I also believe if you looked up Joe Blunt he's probably be able to knock you one up if you want to slide further to the right on the Authenticity Scale.
Other than that, if you are looking for CW Marine Corps uniform information I would suggest looking contacting Steve Bockmiller with the Ship's Company (http://www.shipscompany.org/) in Baltimore. Him and his Marines do it right.

That's it. I looked at the one you posted. I may contact Joe...do you know anyone who has the Quartermaster shop one?
According to the regs, I need to buy 8 of them and two frocks!
Another option I suppose is to get a undress frock from Sekela.
