I love that forage cap... I didn't want to break in a new one until my present one fell apart, but sometimes exceptions must be made.
I'm guessing that this would have been a private-purchase item. What would be the likelihood that an ordinary rank-and-file soldier would have one? (Help me out; I'm looking for an excuse here.)
How much $$ with the ventilator added? Might as well go all the way.

The commercial caps on enlisted men is quite common. You also see commercial blouses in photographs of enlisted men more frequently than you do in reenacting. The original cap is not identified, but there are plenty of identified examples. There is a picture of the artist who painted the cyclorama of the Battle of Atlanta, in an enlisted frock and commercial forage cap. I will post this tomorrow if you like.
The ventilator is an additional $30 installed on ANY cap.
