North Carolina Stone gate question.

An Englishman on a toy soldier collector forum would like to know if stone gates like this could be found in North Carolina. It's a stock scenery piece. It look like two large standing stones as a frame for the gate. Thanks in advance.

I have lived my entire life in North Carolina and pride myself on paying attention as I wander around. I also have a degree in historic preservation but that is besides the point on noticing stone gates.

Here in the western Piedmont area of NC there is an abundance of rock walls, structures, and fences that somewhat resemble your pic.

Case in point is the fence at around Hopewell Presbyterian Church just North of Charlotte which date to 1800's maybe 1790. Many of the Scots-Irish who cam here were Masons and much of their work still exists.

Key point here is "western Piedmont". It has been a few years since I have reenacted at Bentonville and Fort Branch but I don't recall seeing any large stones like this in the sandy soil of the Tidewater area.

I grew up in NC and I don't recall ever seeing stone gates like that anywhere but west-central and western NC where you had alot of Scotch-Irish. Most tidewater gates would be along the lines of something you'd see in pics of Williamsburg, VA- mostly wood posts and gates.

You can find them there now, but only due to modern shipping and freight (Lowes/Home Depot). But I doubt you'd find originals from CW or earlier periods. Just my 2 cents.

The Englishman planned to use his gate for the 1770s and 80s in displays of Loyalist/Patriot military miniatures. (toy soldiers) He has figures of that punk Banastre Tarleton and his legion.
