Descendants of Point Lookout POW Organization

Welcome to the 18th Descendants of Point Lookout POW’s Pilgrimage!

Each year, we the descendants, make our annual Pilgrimage to Point Lookout, Maryland

to the hallowed grounds where over 52,000 of our family were imprisoned and 1,000's of men, women and children died there from 1863-1865. We make this Pilgrimage

to mourn our dead, present a memorial tribute in their name as well as perform our living

history in their honor. Each year at this time the members of the Descendants

Organization also meet and hold their Annual Descendants meeting the evening before

the Memorial services.

Last year we dedicated the completion of our long awaited project, Confederate

Memorial Park. Many of our members and visitors could not be here due to the untimely

arrival of Tropical Storm Hannah. So this year we also greet those of you who have not

yet seen this beautiful Park. It represents the great honor which we still hold for our

ancestors who gave up so much for the cause of Southern Liberty!

Those who wish to join the Pilgrimage may do so at the times given below:

Saturday, October 10th, 2009 at 11:00 AM the Descendants will join with the SCV

Vincent Camalier Camp #1359 at the Confederate Cemetery for their Memorial Service.

The keynote speaker will be the famed Mr. H.K. Edgerton.

When the SCV Memorial is completed we will take the short walk to Confederate

Memorial Park. The Descendants Organization’s Ceremony will begin at 1:00 PM and

should last about an hour. The President of the Descendants of Pt. Lookout, Org,

William J. Hagin, will make his opening remarks and introduce the keynote speaker Rev.

FR. Alister Anderson.

There will be vendors, food as well as “Lee’s Miserables” re-enactors in the living

history area. These re-enactors are descendants who portray their ancestors in prison

garb.

We look forward to meeting one and all,

William J. Hagin, President

Descendants of Pt. Lookout, Org.

My ancestor Richard Louis Cates was held at Point Lookout after being captured on 14 July 1863. He was part of the 28th NC.

Wish I could be there for the event. Kind of a long haul from Alabama.

It sure is a haul. Be assured, however, that the ceremony will remember your ancestor and all who suffered at Point Lookout.

My ancestor, Isaac Lemuel Cushing 44 th North Carolina Infantry, also made it out after being captured at Petersburg, April 1865.
