I had one more question in reference to the Army of Northern Virginia. I want to get rid of my less then accurate mainstream vendor CSA belt for something more accurate. Did the Richmond Depot issue any specific belt to the ANV (fork tongue, CSA) belt or was it up to the men? The two belts I was looking at was the fork tongue belt or the Georgia frame buckle. Is there any record of which belt men in the ANV wore during the war. I'm progressivly updating and authenticating my impression for an ANV soldier mid war 1863-64. I've updated my uniform to correct Richmond Depot issued trousers and jacket. I've also updated all my leather gear to correct accoutrements issued by the Richmond Depot. All I have left to update is my belt and shoes. Shoes I have covered by Missouri Boots and shoes so all that leaves me with is the correct type of belt

You should be ok with a frame or an iron roller buckle..

If you are looking for a good generic ANV belt, then a roller buckle belt , iron of course, is the way to go.
I highly suggest contacting Nick Duvall of Duvall leatherworks- his work can be matched by none.

Rick,
As has been already noted, roller buckles, Georgia Frames, or forked tongue buckles were all quite common in the ANV.
You could also hang around for twenty years and collect two roller buckles, a Georgia Frame, two forked tongue buckles, a Federal buckle with the "US" tapped out, and a copper egg shaped "CS" buckle; all attached to different belts. Naw, nobody would do that! :)

Don't throw away your CSA buckle yet. If you have the correct style CSA cast brass buckle that is OK for a ANV impression. (There is an Atlanta style and a Virginia style.) It was available in limited numbers in 64 and most likely 63. There have been several found around Petersburg and Richmond. The reason it is frowned upon by most is that it was widely reproduced and there are so many seen in reenacting. If you have the facts to back you up you can silence most critics. Look at the on line relic dealers and try to find some CSA buckles from the ANV sites. Of course they were also found in the deep south so if no dug location is given simply look for another one.

Ditto what Jim Mayo said above. I prefer our guys wear the rectangular ANV as they are actually underrepresented around here. Just avoid the Va State seal plates as these were for web gear only.
