I recently was listening to readings of his works and then learned that Robert G. Ingersoll had been Colonel of the Eleventh Illinois Cavalry.

There is actually an Edison recording of his voice on Youtube.

His detractors tried to smear his record in the War. You can read about it on Google Books.

"The Truth Told About Him As A Soldier, About His Capture By The Confederates, About His Family, His Life At Peoria, Ill., The Honors Shown Him By The
Nation's Greatest Men, And A Great Many
Other Things Concerning Which The
Clergy Of The Country Have Persistently And Dishonestly
Misrepresented Him.

By E. M. MACDONALD, Editor of " The Truth Seeker," "

He was a big man and a really big man in later life.
