I guess PETA did not exist in the 1930s to express displeasure at killing of insects. They do not make cartoons like that anymore..thanks

We're getting an invasion of mosquitos at the moment that's causing even the locals to comment.

There'a number of things in Betty Boop that might get "letters." There were a number of "war" cartoons with erect cannons that go limp after firing during the 30s.

While they don't make em like that anymore, I'm surprised what gets by in new cartoons when the writers add stuff for the adults that have to watch with their kids.

Check out the sight gag at 5:15 and compare it to this, published in 1853 (http://books.google.com/books?id=jeoqAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA184&dq=mosquito+clinched+date:0-1865&output=html):

An American living near the Grand River, Michigan, being in the woods, was one day so annoyed by mosquitoes, that he took refuge under an inadverted potash-kettle. His first emotions of joy at his happy deliverance and secure asylum were hardly over, when the mosquitoes, having found him, began to drive their probosces through the kettle. Fortunately he had a hammer in his pocket, and he clinched them down as fast as they came through, until at last such a host of them were fastened to the poor man's domicile, that they rose and flew away with it, leaving him shelterless!

...a company was called The Enoree Mosquitoes. I assume because Enoree South Carolina had a lot of mosquitoes!
