Hello All,

I am new to the forum and wanted to know if there was any documentation of confederate infantry wearing captured federal cavalry overcoats. My unit portrays an infantry regiment in the ANV and I wanted to know if It would be correct wearing a mounted greatcoat.

Thanks Thib,

I remember seeing this thread and was aware that the confederate army widely used federal overcoats, I guess what i was wondering if there were any regulations in the confederate army for infantry wearing captured cavalry overcoats. I have a copy of " Cadet Grey and Butternut Brown" and I see no mention of it in there. I dont want to come to an event with a mounted overcoat and have someone say its incorrect.

When I read "federal overcoat" I just assumed it was all types across the board. If they were using them they may have gotten their hands on the mounted variety also.

Thanks for the help, I guess it didn't matter if they wore mounted or foot pattern coats, does anyone have a preference to which lining they prefer, I am going to order a new one before Ceder Creek and wasn't sure if I should go with wool or a heavy muslim lining, from what I see they were both used but i'm not sure if one is warmer than the other

As Curt would say, PEC: plain, everyday, common.

Mounted greatcoats were rare because cavalry were (relatively speaking) less common than infantry. Federal officers were supposed to wear the mounted greatcoat (presumably to distinguish them from infantry). While it might be that a shipment of mounted greatcoats would have fallen into the hands of the Rebs, your better bet would be a plain, everyday, common infantry pattern.

Thanks guys,

I'm gonna go with a plain infantry pattern coat.
