Hello The Board!

I need to chase the threads on the end of an original Remington Zouave ramrod and tap a handle for it.....(yep, patch and rod stuck at the breach):(

What was the spec. thread size? Were all period US rods the same standard?

Thank You,
W Abbot

Will,
You are more than welcome.
When you decide you want to clean your firearm (s) with a proper cleaning rod and not your "ram" rod, let me know, I'll put you onto a place that you can buy the best for the price.

OUCH!!!.....But yes, I deserve that. In self defense; this was a "I think I'll clean it 'just because' it may need it" situation. (obviously it did) and alas I haven't even fired it since it was left to me. I am interested in better tools for the job tho' and would appreciate the chance to talk to knowledgable folks to incresae my abilities and safety quotient with original and repro arms alike.

I stand, sir, chastened in Montana and am your hmble.,etc.

Blair,

Myself (and I'm sure others) would greatly appreciate this information also.

Many Thanks!

If you saturate the patch with penetrating fluid for a while it may come out. You may have to push the rod down slightly before drawing it out but I have had good results with folks that try to use the slot in an enfield rod for holding a patch while cleaning. Soak it overnight. Penetrating fluid works better than light weight oil. Water will also work most of the time but if it doesn't draw out you have the moisture problem.

Will & Bill,

This link should take you right to the cleaning rods. They offer a lot of cleaning gear and with a little web search of your own I believe you will find these folks offer the best prices.

If you have the tap a die stock can be made from it. If you want more info I will have my husband post the details.

Thank you M'am,

I would appreciate your husband's input. That will 'put the fix on it' I'm sure.

Many thanks to all who have helped.

Will,

How much of the threaded end of the ram rod is sticking out of the barrel?
And are the threads on the ram rod damaged?

I just put in the mail to him a Sergeants tool that appears to have the correct threads (not 10-32; and my 10-24 tap won't quite match up - so I believe it is 10-26) and hopefully with the "Y" end on it and opposite a female set of threads he may just be able to get it "horsed" out. Hopefully...

IF there is enough sticking out often you can take a cloth canteen strap wrap it around the rod and use it pull the rod out. Verks like a charm.

Do like Jimmy Mayo said and wet it out with eral first.

If enough of the threads are sticking out use a needle nose vice grip. Lightly grip the exposed threads, clamp the vice grip down. Now lightly tap the vice grip with a ball peen hammer to start the ramrod up. If it starts to come up unclamp and grab a section of the ram rod with the vice grips and keep lightly tapping until the rod becomes unstuck.
I have seen this work more than once.
