All,
I am looking for documentation on Federal officers wearing brass rank insignia not shoulder straps. I remember a thread many moons ago about this same topic either on this forum or the other but have had no luck with the search function.

Thanks in advance,

Are you talking about sudued rank insignia, or full sized?

Not sure I've ever seen brass insignia that wasn't subdued, but then, I haven't looked for it.

I forgot to mention that, yes, subdued. There is a shell jacket in EOG (Union) with these exact same insignia that I am looking for, only more documentation. They almost resemble modern day rank bars.

PEC, as Curt would say:

Plain
Everyday
Common

What the majority of them wore, not what one or two wore.

Also some relics are not period but post-war with GAR additions.

Could you cite the page in EoG? I would like to see what you're referring to, but don't want to spend the morning searching for it.

Bill,
The page is 111, 1st Lt. Florance W. Grugan: 2nd Penna. Heavies. It appears to be embroidered but I could be wrong. I at one time had a photo of an officer's fatigue blouse with the brass rank but lost it during a computer crash.

A light bulb just came on! What I am refering to is/was called stamped brass rank, just to clarify. I found a thread on the other forum but found no photo links to said insignia.

There is quite a bit of contemporary reference to stamped brass officer rank and hat badges, particularly in the ads from period newspapers. Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, and others supplied those on the private purchase market during the war. I've seen some vendors today take the modern Marine Corps pin-on insignia and attach a wire back, as this is a close facsimile, but I'm not a total fan of the practice.

Gentleman,
In my collection I have a 1st lieutenants collar tab which is 3/4"x1/2".
The base metal is copper with a gold plating.
I say gold, since it was dug at Sailors Creek and shows no tarnish and still has some dried clay on it.
Also there is still the silk ribbon, either dark blue or black, rapping the center of the tab.
I shall try to take some photos of it tonight and post tomorrow.
Most Humbly Yours,
James D. Gould

This might be what you're looking for?

Nope not looking for Smith's. I am looking for the subdued rank which was stamped brass not embroidered seen in late war photos.
