Is there any Authentic s out there who can enjoy this hobby, who can either go to an Authentic event or a Mainstream event and have a good time?

Not that im an authentic by any stretch but I like to think I try doing things by their book, not our own. By that measure Ive gone to everything from corner (wax museum-ish) living history to the Goofysburgs, Recons, preservation marches and beyond. Ive only not enjoyed myself once- because I ended up in a hospital. If everyone is wound to tight to not enjoy why their out there and when, its no use trying.

I try my best to be as authentic as possible.I do go to the campaigner events as much as I can.But I also go to streamer events. The only time I do not enjoy a streamer event is simply because it is not a well ran event.I know that at "Battle of Spit Rock" not everyone will wear a Wambaugh kit and sleep under the stars. But if the event is well ran,as a decent "show",and the people are friendly,I will try to enjoy myself. If someone has a fine bottle,I will enjoy myself even more. But if not,I will still try.I have been to plenty of streamer events that have been a blast.I go to those to have fun,but to campaigner events for a different type of fun.

I try hard but I go to a lot of small town events that are dreadful, but I make the best of them and try to spread the gospel of authenticity.

Michael,

I agree with you. Make your own fun with lads in your unit and be open to meeting and making new friends.

Yup, several members of my company/battalion do both types of events. If it were not for these people I would not be authentic or doing campaigner events. If we leave the streamer events to the farbs then the public will ALWAYS get the wrong idea of what the Civil War was like (uugh yea every private had a big wall or A-frame tent that went with them all the time. Can you imagine an actual soldier staggering along under the weight of the tent and the poles alone. He would have been to tired to fight come time for battle. So much for Jackson's foot cavalry.)

If we want to actually teach the CW to people we have to go to where the taters are.

So yes we do both. As has been said several times over an event is what you make of it. Spending time with some good pards--priceless.

Too much of any one type of event, and I either get too dang stressed out (too many "hardcorish" ones in a row) or too bored (too many corner living histories) or too jaded (too many shoot-em-ups with a mix of farb, perfectly good mainstream, and more progressive authentics).

Variety is the spice of life.

I love doing events with my mainstream unit, the 5th NY.

I love doing events with my progressive pards in the Skillygalee Mess.

I love doing both mainstream events and progressive-minded events with the several companies of the CVG who have consistantly taken me in as a guest and with other individuals with which I have had the fortune to make friends over the years.

I love doing programs at schools or at my church all by my lonesome (altho' having a pard always makes it more enjoyable).

And y'know what? I enjoy my hobby. A lot!

and cake > pie. Usually. Wet-bottom shoo-fly throws off the curve.

I like pie.

And I like slaw w/ my BBQ, but on the side not on the sandwich. But given a choice, I will often go with ribs over a sandwich. The ultimate test of a BBQ restuarant though is how well they can BBQ chicken.

I only attend events I think fit what what I like to do in MY hobby. I pick and choose so I'll end up happy at the end. Ergo, I've never been to an event I didn't like. 'Cept this **** Afghanastan thing. It sucks.

Anyway...

There's an old business addage that applies here. If someone doesn't like a product, they'll tell 10 people if they have a bad experience with a product and if they have a good experience with a product they'll 1. This applies to internet boards too. Any internet board. I'll give you a prime example. A year and a half ago, I was looking at buying a new over and under shotgun. The price seemed very reasonable. So, I did an internet search and found several message boards with posts on the product I was interested in buying. Almost every one was negative, somebody complaining about and extractor/ejector not working or a firing pin not striking properly. So I called a bunch of gunsmith's. All had not one bad thing to say about the product. I asked around at my gun club and contacted folks who currently owned the product. Same deal, all positive. I now own two, 12 & 20 ga and have 3000 rounds through both without any problems.

I think it was Bill Rodman that mentioned sort of the same thing on another thread.

Here's another old business addage that applies. "You can't be all things to all people."

Some dead US President said something like that, about pleaseing some of the people some of the time.....

Tom, Tom, Tom.....Do you not realize that the only real BBQ is made of pig? Just ask the BBQ authentics, who only attend cph BBQ joints. I swan.........!

Now, with tongue removed from cheek.......

As with most others, I can enjoy a range of event types, depending upon my own wants and needs at any given time. Generally, I can ignore the dumb stuff while concentrating on those things that are worthwhile; it's rare that the inverse is true, though it has happened.

We are having a small event in Scottville, Ky next weekend June 27,28. Meal will be Hickory Smoked Pork BBQ with slaw on the side. If its not Pork BBQ its not BBQ.

Oh, I love my pork BBQ (don't even talk to me about BBQ beef), but I have found that if a restaurant can properly BBQ chicken then their pork BBQ will always be good. It means that cook is willing to take the time to make sure his meat is nice and tender and the spikes have had time to properly permeate into the meat. If the pork BBQ is mediocre then the chicken BBQ will always be lousy.

I think that the next "US" event should be near Memphis, we can campaign down down Memphis, hike 2.3 miles through the worst part of town, worship at the feet of Forest, and grab some good Bar B Q and hit a Redbirds game..

I may be Creole and all, but how can BBQ be a noun, when it describes how something is cooked. Now you would not say Boiled was a noun describing how you cook shrimp or Da cre va, (Crawfish)...

And to answer my own question, I am just going to have fun.

of any ilk they are a small but vocal minority. And they think by shouting out their opinions that somehow makes them more valid.

I suspect that the majority of "I don't do this event because it's not good enough for me types" are slackers and pains in the buttocks to the events they DO go to.

I make my own good time no matter what type of event it is.

If the officer screws up because he doesn't know what he is doing, oh well it happened in the real war too. I try to die gracefully.

If there is nothing to do, well a good soldier doesn't stand when he can sit and doesn't sit when he can lie down. So I lie down an look at the clouds (or take a nap). You know what, that happened in the real war too.

And if we screw something up at drill, we that happened ...... you get the point.

Any idiot can complain about things. Then there are those who see issues and work towards a solution.

I ignore the idiots and I endorse (and try to help) the solution finders.

And I MAKE my weekend enjoyable no matter what it is a mind set.

As to pie or cake, depends on the pie or cake whether I like it our not. But is is pretty hard to punt a BBQ under any circumstances. Unless it is one of those metrasexual barbecues. You know the ones with the w(h)ine coolers, and no MEAT anywhere in sight.

Drill, drill drill! We spend more time with drill than we ever do with a battle or living history. We do both “Streamer” and “Campaigner” events. Love them both for the different reasons. We went to Brice’s and had a ball even through all the rain. It was a mainstream event and my wife was the company cook. The boys from Alabama and Louisiana joined the mess to get in on the good food! We camped heavy and enjoyed it. We also do events where it is bedrolls off the horses. Know your event and know the expectations. To me it does not make sense to go and complain.

Tom, I'm not sure where you're getting your BBQ, but if I find spikes in mine, I usually try to find another place to eat.......

Assuming you're not into S&M, that was just too good to pass up.

Never been to nor seen one of them. MEAT! MMMMMMmmmmmm.....!

I was at a small silly Mass. event on my own back in the early 80s where the 5th NHV picked me up. I was with them almost 20 years. The small events can be good for shopping units and recruits.
