You may find it much easier to order if you ask for percussion caps.

If the company he orders his"caps" from has been in the buisness of selling these types of products for any amount of time I'm sure they know what he is talking about.

I am guessing that was a knock on my spelling. I am dyslexic and do my best. My apologies.

Many sulters will not ship percussion caps, due to legal considerations. Often they must be purchased on site.

I order 600 caps from Blockade Runner. The shipping was very reasonable, and I had them in a few days.

If you are ordering caps for an entire unit, you would be well served to find an FFL holder in your immediate area and purchase a larger quantity. I purchase for my unit and we combine with a couple other units to purchase large quantities in the spring. We find it to be more cost effective in the long run although, you will have a larger outlay of cash initially. Good luck.

I would say either Blackpowderva.com or DGW (Dixie Gun Works)http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?products_id=3723

I'm the ordnance man for my company. I've purchased caps from Back Creek, Deer Creek Products, and a few others. The price has skyrocketed since last spring. That's why I shop around. Our last purchase was 2 sleeves (1000 per sleeve) from Crescent City at the 145th Resaca. Cost was $8.50 per 100 cap tin, with no shipping involved obviously.
Unless you order in a large quantity, the cost of shipping can be prohibitive. The last time I had them shipped, we ordered 6000, so it spread the shipping cost out farther.
I digress, but the best advice I can give you is to shop around. It's the same product and all of the vendors mentioned so far are reputable.

At the rate things are going with the price of powder and caps, we'll all be doing living histories. Or taking hits at the first shot. Or putting in so little powder the musket just goes pop. Or just yelling BANG!

You've got that right! I was buying Navy Arms caps last spring in 250 cap tins for $7 per tin. Now, they are unavailable and the RWS caps are outrageous. I guess it's the price we have to pay to play.

They definitly have and now you get less (100 instead of 250 caps) and pay the same price or sometimes more (depending on where you order from.) Another one I just thought of is Graf and Sons. http://www.grafs.com/powders/3532. I'm not sure if they sell RWS German caps but I think they do sell sleeves of the new CCI 4 wing caps.

I was told by a gentleman who purchases for his unit, that he gets them directly from the manufacturer, but he has to order 10,000 at a time.

no, these were the RWS ones.

I haven't seen any of the 4 wingers for sale in my local shops.

An FFL dealer may be able to get the caps from a supplier at a lower rate when buying in bulk as they do tend to receive better prices than the public. That maybe the best way to get a large order at a reasonable price.
Also it would be nice to answer a new posters question without a smarta** remark as I have notice that some posters have a bad attitude or must be general jacka**es all the time.

The Gun Works sells CCI Musket caps for $55 for 1000. They ship fast and will ship in bulk.

Mbond,

the $55 item you listed is for the 6 wing caps which are banned from most reenactments. It appears they do sell the RWS 4 wingers but at $95 per thousand.

Jurgitem,

I never heard this about 6 wing caps being a safety issue. No one has every even brought up caps, other than to make sure you had some.

Can you point me to any organization that has this in their safety protocols so that I can get a copy of the six wing caps? It would be nice to discuss this with the lads next time we get together.

Thanks,

We in the Trans-Mississippi Brigade are restricted from using the six wing cap. The cap disintergrates and is a danger to other shooters. We use only four winged caps, ie. the "vorderladen zundhutchen". They seem to be the best cap on the market.

We have also banned the use of the six wing caps because of safety issues. We're only allowed to use the four winged RWS caps. The six winged CCI caps have had problems with wings breaking off and acting as shrapnel. One company I know use to use the six winged caps. This group banned them after one guy shot his musket and shrapnel from the cap broke off hitting the guy next to him right near the corner of his eye. Luckily it missed his eye but it was too close for comfort and since then no one in their company is allowed to use the CCI six winged caps

Thanks,

We have banned the six wing caps also, but we haven't put it into our safety protocols. We have had way too many men get "winged" by the 6-wing caps, and everyone has agreed to not use them.

As a side note, it was my understanding (through a thread earlier this year on this forum) that CCI would no longer be making a 6 wing cap, and would only produce them in 4 wing variety. A simple search should turn this up.

Most sutlers are selling 100 count plastic "tins" for $8.50 to $9.00 at events...

Looking a the GunWorks site, at $95.55 per 1000, that's $9.50 per 100 carton. Add in the $20 S&H for hazmat - and that works out to $11.55 per 100 count. (!)

Blackpowder VA is selling them for $70 per 1000. Not sure what their shipping prices are.

Matt,

I believe you are the third person to suggest "Back Creek Gun Shop" out of Winchester, Va.
Jackie (John) Venskoske is use to dealing with large orders and providing discount depending on the quantity on the order.
Maybe folks will start to listen? Maybe they will look it up for themselves?
No!! That's too easy.
The price on these things are not going to get any cheaper people!

If your in Michigan you can try the Jag Shop 269-694-4749 in Otsego Mich., or even try believe it or not Shantz Gun and tire in Otsego also. I bought 1k of them at Shantz a year ago at about 8 b ucks per 250. I just add them to my stock since I do BP shooting also and try to buy when I see a deal.
In Regards to the banning of the 6 wingers nope never been to an event yet that you were turned away by using them( I use 4 wingers). I have a couple of pards that won't use anything but the 6 wingers. They keep comng to events and they keep letting them in.-
