I saw a review in the NYT back on March about a modern reprint of this 1857 book and this morning confirmed my suspicions that the original could be found on Google Books (and look at the illustrator's name!):

The physiology of New York boarding-houses
By Thomas Butler Gunn, A R Waud
Illustrated by A R Waud
Published by Mason Brothers, 1857
Original from Harvard University
Digitized Sep 6, 2006
300 pages

So, you can read it online or go to your bookstore and buy the modern reprint from Rutgers University Press. Either way, this looks to offer very interesting background on the civilian lifestyle of many of our period's urban dwellers.

Thanks! That is perfect for me! I'm about to start researching pre-CW NYC.

The version on Cornell's Making of America site is easier to read than Google Books' version. Be advised also that the newly published in-print version leaves out some of the wonderful illustrations. (This is possibly my favorite book.)

I harvested some of the images a few years ago:

Marc,

Thank you. The illustrations are a hoot.
