Has anyone tried to melt down your bad pewter buttons to recast them? I'm lucky enough to have saved a few that popped off my uniforms. Seems a shame to throw them away if I can do something else with them.
Pewter melts at a pretty low heat, 170–230 °C, as it's mostly tin. Up to 99 %. It's good for toy soldiers or just make a nice paperweight. Your buttons might be: "Britannia metal is a pewter-type alloy favoured for its silvery appearance and smooth surface. The composition is approximately 93% tin, 5% antimony, and 2% copper" You can also hammer your buttons into nitfy ID tags. Be careful melting it around ANY water. "Boom!"
