I hope you can see this picture okay. It is Lt. Nathan Edgerton of the 6th US Colored Infantry. My question is about the emblem on his cap. To me it appears to be a large eagle. Has anyone seen this type of emblem before, or can you tell me what it is?
Thanks.

Looks to me to be a forage cap with an infantry horn on the front with a number in the center. The top of the cap is hanging forward a bit and cutting off the top half of the horn. There is also glare off of the chinstrap. There is also glare off of the chinstrap. I can see how you might see the eagle at a glance, but I haven't seen a device fitting that description.

It appears also to me to be an infantry bugle device with a regimental number in the middle. The top of the device, whether embroidered or metallic, is cut off by the fold of the crown of the hat over the front, but I'm fairly certain it isn't an eagle.

I would concur. That's an infantry bugle with a regimental number in the middle.

And with no coffee yet this morning, I looked at it, and yeah, right off the bat I was saying its and Infantry Horn, the top cut off by the disk of the forage... its so far pert near unanimous

I concur with everyone else it's a Infantry horn.

Yup, after looking at it for a little bit, I will agree, its just a bugle with a number.

BTW - the 6th USCT is one of my favorite units. Co D of the 6th suffered the highest single engagement loss of any company in Federal service, and the chaplain of the 6th also died while in service. Have you read their regimental history "Strike the first Blow?" Lots of good demographic information there.
