Ok I realize most of the guys here are federal so ill pose the question to the confederate guys
I looked at regulations and cant quite seem to find the answer
so things things

1.
I plan to get a sack coat since surgeons were well behind the lines were colar insignias possible ? (stand up/fall colar)

2
would a surgeons sash only be worn in dress alpha, or could it be worn say on a sack coat?

Collar insignias, in most cases, were all that were on a coat. Although, there is evidence that shows surgeons did have the black cuffs and collar facings (some even had piping), you may want to check with the particular unit you are with. See what their uniform regs were during the war.

I haven't seen any pics of a sash being worn by a surgeon in a fatigue jacket yet? But, that's not to say it didn't happen.
