Police said this morning that the man involved in an apparent double murder-suicide in Wilmette shot and killed his wife and her son on Saturday with a replica Civil War gun, then killed himself a day later after leaving a "lengthy note" saying that he wouldn't go back to jail.

Investigators found a muzzle-loading long gun they believe Christopher Motes used in Civil War reenactments next to Wiley's body, police said at a press conference.
This terrible news has certainly shaken the community as a whole.

Please note that it was the son, a victim, who was the CW reenactor, and not the father, who committed the crime.

who ever owns the Gun in the Reenacting world, Should always have it in a safe place where no other hands should be allowed to touch it.
This Reenactor must of done Live shooting as well, for to have bullets.

First, let me say I am sorry for the loss of life. May the innocent find peace in Heaven.
This is the type of incident that I have feared would occur that will start the cry for tighter gun laws which encompass our reproduction black powder weapons.

Same d@mn thing it's always been: Some @sshat decides he's going to call it quits and cash out, but won't go without taking some other people with him so his own misery can be spread around to others.
It is what it is.
The other thing is that a history student, buff, or "expert" shouldn't ask what the world is coming to, especially a CW/WBTS student, buff, or "expert."
The reason my mother worried that I'd be found "dead in a ditch somewhere" is that her Victorian mother told her that because people were found dead in ditches. Check out the stories in 1800s newspapers in the inside pages. Murder/suicide existed back in history, was reported, and was just as sad and tragic for all involved.

This is a terrible and senseless loss of life. Period.
I posted this story on Facebook when I first saw it and it makes me think that I could have possibly come to be friends with this person. (The son) It could have been a random meeting in Gburg or anywhere else. :-?
Don't worry about the gun problems... black powder rifles aren't efficient for drive by's. It's the Henrys and Spencers that we should worry about.
