"Excelsior" means "higher" in Latin, and is the New York State motto. There is a sun scene on the state flag...

The internet is a wonderful research tool. Wish we'd had it when I was in school... ;)

Andy,

To add to Carole's excellent information:

The symbolism comes from the arms of New York State.

The sun supposedly comes from the medieval sun badge of the House of York (for the Duke of York after whom the state is named). The sun is rising behind Mount Beacon, over the Hudson River. "Excelsior" means "Higher" or "Ever Upward", which is the motto of New York State. (Translating Latin is an inexact endeavor at best.)

No, I have seen many of them and I was just wondering about some of the symbols on the badge.

That's neat to know. Interesting.
