From the book, "Eagles over the Alps", page 23, an Austrian general writes in 1798, "It comes to my attention that certain people complain that the infantry have got their feet wet. That is what happens in wet weather, and we all ......
Only women, dandies and slugabeds want to keep their feet dry." In future (sic)any loudmouth who complains against the imperial service will be dismissed from his command as a big-head."

Not sure which is worse, a slugabed or a big-head. Infantry complaining about wet feet is certainly not a new topic.

Maybe foreflushers and n'er do wells are worse. My two kids are slug a beds.

Maybe that Austrian General never had trench foot. My dad did.

In the winter, I could never, ever, ever keep my feet dry, and thus they were perpetually, painfully cold. This culminated in a Boy Scout snow camping trip to Mt. Rainier when I was 14. At a certain point no one could find me, because I was down at the visitor center bathroom holding my feet up to the hand dryer. In the warm, dry foot department, I was always a frustrated failure. And a dandy, lady-like, big-headed slugabed.

Napoleonic troops never had to cross Shakel's Ford, so they were soft.

I forgot about the winter day I carelessly stayed in wet frozen boots. A day or so later a layer of skin pealed off my soles.
The Austrians had pretty white uniforms but did they win?
