Lovely. I like the kid leaning against the tree. Very natural pose - he looks like a reenactor! :D (Is that a watch chain peeking out near his pocket?) In that first pic, is that an NCO in the rear of the photo with the frock coat and trousers with stripes? He doesn't seem to have stripes on his coat. But a profusion of hat brass, though.

That's funny, cause I thought that kid looked least like a reenactor. His pants are too "lived in".
On the other hand, Mr. Striped Pants and the guy to the left doing the "Capt Morgan" pose are the two I expect to see copied at an event soon. They look like reenactors: Too carefully put together to be random.
All in all, looks like men 30 years younger than me!
The fellow at the wash tub looks like a black man.

I believe they are all in sack coats (they are just long on these guys...)
I count three guys with Trowser stripes and no chevrons...

Are you sure? If you are talking about the white blurry areas on the top of some hats, they looked more like smudges on the film to me.

I agree and suspect that he may be a hired servant for an officer or just paid laundryman for the unit.

I think it is interesting at the number of people wearing boots.
Also in the second photo... look at the two men with cheverons. don't they look as though they have some kind of backer the strips were sown to and then sown onto the sleeve?

Anyone....are those buttons or grommets or what on the laundryman's trouser cuff?

Any chance it could be a different type of coat? It is probably a sack coat but just figured id ask.

Could these be what are called Officers type sack coats today?

Buttons I'm thinking. Could these be mounted trousers?

I would say the second picture would be a good one to post on the thread that talked about whether soldiers wore much brass or not. There sure are a lot of breastplates showing there!

Those are buttons that allowed a strap to be put around the shoe or boot to keep the trouser leg from riding up. Those are usually to be found on mounted troops, either cavalry or artillery.

Also known as private purchase or commercial blouses. Although not as common as the old standard issue fatigue blouse (4 button sack), they are found in enough images to warrant strong evidence that not all soldiers wanted to look slovenly when they could afford a little upgrade, and also enough images to show that it wasn't just officers, but privates and nco's as well.
Thank you Ross. I've only done infantry.

That's a wonderful laundry tub, too, looks kind of homemade.
The chevrons look to me like the material on the coat kind of puckered where someone did a less than perfect job of slapping them on. The corporal's look like they aren't even sewn all the way around the perimeter, althought that might just be my interpretation of all the shadows and bends that don't seem to produce a straight line where chevrons meet jacket.
I'm not seeing any hat brass. Can anyone blow these up at all?

Merry Christmas all, Is this in Fall '64 on west bank of the James just below Richmond ? Severe downslope into camera position, location of drainage ditch and tub near source, fine local pine tree, and shadows as soldiers form on steep bank for photo op......just a guess, JW PS: Correct on Negro pants buttons.....very Federal....very late War correct.....very useful.....PPS: On "other guy", note trowsers inside boots.....very Federal.....us Southrons tried to protect the hard to get leather boots, not look cool and protect the sutler row wool trowsers as seen at most CW reenactments

Not sure on the location, or the Group, for that matter.

My thoughts...
*The washtub is probably a cut-down saltpork barrel. It's like it was hacked with an ax. (note the upward cuts) Also the board is just a piece of pine that was chiseled to make the necessary bumps for the washboard and handle.
*It looks to me that there are three examples of the "frog-mouth" pockets sewn into the pants of a few of the fellas in the top pic.
*The boy leaning on the tree is missing his chinstrap, yet has retained the buttons. Also, it might be said that he is keeping his BIG trowsers up by a piece of rope. He must also have something tucked away in the front of those trowsers, too. haha. Laughing aside, why else would he want to show off the front of them? They also don't fold & wrinkle the way that they would normally. Makes me suspicious that he may have been playing up to the camera.
*The second picture is really cool. Yes, lots of breastplates. Cool hats, boots, a plaid necktie (or hankerchief; he also looks like his SGT stripes are definitely tacked on and not fully sewn all around), vests, real cool looking facial hair.
I would also have to say that we are looking at Western Theater photos.
Nice.

Is it me, or does the Corporal in the above picture look eerily like Brian "Speedy" Merrick? I mean, dead ringer. (If the name doesn't ring a bell he was the dashing  Reb in 'Wicked Spring')
As far as other stuff, notice the 1st Sgt is wearing a baldric and NCO sword. I like the mix in hats. They don't look like the typical SR crap that I see some people wear at events. No cowboy junk. Battered down Hardee's and civilian hats, along with a mix of forage caps. Very cool. LOTS of boots. More than I would figure. Also, one of the lads laying down in front is wearing a pair of civilian shoes ike the type that I think Rob Land has in collection. I would love to see those, if they aren't already being offered elsewhere.

You're right Guy, thats an eerie resemblance to Speedy. Darken Brian's hair up a tad, and you've got him. Then again, find any skinny feller with a few hairs sticking out of his chin in a period image and it can look like Speedy!

That image is definitely a garrison image, probably refitting and resting after a campaign. The just tacked on stripes are one indicator, the boots another (great for the mud of camp, not always so good on the march). The fact that they're all accoutred sans canteens and haversacks mean they were probably on parade or drill.

Did you notice that they are posed in front of what appears to be two wall tents. If you look closely at the last of the close-ups you will see a much smaller tent to the left which I am assuming are two shelter halves made into a tent. The other SGT in the picture is wearing a cap box by which I am assuming that he is carrying a musket instead of a sword.
