"I beg to present to you as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah ,with 100 and 50 guns, and plenty of ammunition, also about 25,000 bales of cotton."
General 'Cump' Sherman to President Lincoln December 22, 1864.
Thanks for the reminder to "get a hump on the back--sometime" David Corbett.

Are we talking about Sherman or the mall on any given day after Thanksgiving?

Justin,
I am refereeing to Sherman’s comments. Is his ghost also bragging about the scorched earth practices of the south at the shopping malls?

Just wanted to get a dig on today's Christmas related stupidity Mark, thats all. Ill leave Sherman's total war concepts to somebody else.

Referring- a typo, I suppose.
The hyperbole is in keeping with holiday advertising, as well. I'll leave the discussion of "Lost Cause" overstatement and misrepresentation for another occasion. Instead, I will focus on a Michigan company who, with their Captain, tied tree branches to the heads of mules and distibuted wagon loads of supplies to refugees outside of Savannah. I find that very much in keeping with the spirit of the season.

LOL. That was great Justin! I needed a good laugh.....
I'll leave the pillaging to Wal-Mart goers, and the larceny to Macy's!

'll leave the pillaging to Wal-Mart goers,
And let's not forget the stampeding. Here in the East, one Walmart temp worker was literally trampled to death by shoppers when the doors opened this past Black Friday. Several of his co-workers were also hospitalized as the result of trying to rescue him. The shoppers then nearly rioted when the police temporarily shut the store for the ensuing investigation.

And the reward for the most cold blooded customer goes to the person who when asked to leave the store due to the death of the man said " but I've been waiting all nite in the line ." Wow...

Dear Polymath Bugler ,
This here is just like you-getting the Secesh all stirred up like a nest of hornets you just disturbed with your bugling ! You know they are sensitive . No Christmas in Andersonville talk neither. I believe you are one of them waving the bloody-shirt fellers

The Holiday Season brings out the stupidity in a lot of people. Some of the questions we get this time of year are truly astounding. It is sorta like this:

If you don't discuss Andersonville, we won't discuss Point Lookout, MD. :D
As far as Sherman is concerned, as bad as he was, everytime I travel through Atlanta I can't help but think..."Where's Sherman when you NEED him?" :D :D

Not all in the South shared the "cause".
From the lyrics of Henry Clay Work:
Yes and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears,
When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years;
Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers,
While we were marching through Georgia.
I'd like to pass out those signs to drivers that didnt clean the snow off their car windows.
BTW, I'm a Ron White fan.

DEAR Buckeye ,
I stated "Secesh " , not Southrons . How is the monument and cannon in the park in downtown Elyria ? I hope they are still there .I used to enjoy that town last century when I was a young feller.

I believe it was in Pulaski, TN, but the date is, as I recall, correct.

Dear [deletion - THP; getting personal] ,
Yes the "social club ," was founded by six attorneys ("I know ! ), Calvin Jones, John B. Kennedy,Frank O. McCord, John C. Lester, Richard Reed , and John R. Crow , in Pulaski ,Tenn. I usually send an email reminder of this holiday occurence to my Secesh companions but if sent every year they become too dependent on it. Thanks for the history tip [deletion - THP; getting personal]

Does your email contain anything about the 1870's disbanding by some of those figures you listed and the Klan's resurge in the early 1900's by some of these cats ?

It seems there might be more to the history of that vile organization than just some ex-CS attorneys started it.

You are drastically straying from the Christmas Theme of this thread. I'm not interested in a history of the KKK on this thread in this forum. Nor a history of what happened to Savannah after its being a Christmas Present from Sherman to Lincoln.
Stay on target.....put full power on front, deflector shields....
If you want to start a KKK Thread, Stones River anniversary thread or a New Years eve thread "We were rousted out of bed at 1AM by Boots and Saddles....after mounting we were all sent back to bed as the bugle call was a false alarm" have at at it.
