Seasons greetings,
I'm looking for some serious advice on making a kepi. I highly enjoy making as much of my gear as possible and have decided to move on to a CS kepi. I have made up a 3-D model of the kepi in The Confederate Sketchbook. After taking my paper model apart, I have drafted up what I feel is a decent pattern worthy of creation in what seems to be the correct sizing.
I have put together a practice kepi from flannel scraps I had stored away. The pieces fit together fine, however, I only put the fabrics together so there was no cardboard crown or visor attached or lining. I currently have the pieces of cardboard glued up for the visor but no fabric attached yet. I am using directions I found on the AC- (http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14483&highlight=oil+cloth+kepi+visor). I have also looked for other instructions or hints but come up with nothing. On the AC forum, the topic has been left rather untouched, so I am looking here for help.
So my questions/needs are:
1. In the Confederate Sketchbook the fabric is only described as "cloth." Is this a cotton drill (as the AC post) or thin like muslin?
2. Is the fabric of the bill glued to the cardboard or only sewn?
3. Are the fabrics of the crown (interior/exterior) glued to the cardboard?
4. If you have made a kepi, what order would you suggest sewing the pieces of the kepi body? Is there a good order? (I was planning on starting with the front short seam and then attaching the body to the crown from the front back and then attaching the back seam and following with the band).
5. Are there any other little details that may make the process easier?
6. Is there another source I can look to for the detailed bits and pieces?
I appreciate any help you may have. Merry Christmas to all.
