Folks,

Can anyone recognize the flat bottomed canteen that this lady is wearing? She may be just an actress in a Vivandiere role. This photo has always been labeled as "unknown."

It looks like a French model -- see the leftmost figure in the Knotel sketch, of the Garde Mobile. The regular infantryman is carrying the canteen described and sketched in McClellan's report to the Secretary of War. On the other hand, I saw pictures of flat-bottomed glass flasks elsewhere. That leads me to think that it could have been made anywhere. Doesn't EOG show a leather flask in that shape?

Thanks Schnapps! I'll look a closer at some the images I have of the Garde Mobile. They had cantinieres/vivandiere up the wazoooo. I only have the Union EOG, I'll take a look.

Looks like this Naval Marine has a similar canteen..

Is that canteen necessarily flat-bottomed? There was an Iron Brigade associated canteen pictured a year ago or so in North and South magazine that had that elongated ovoid shape. Great picture.

Hallo!

IMHO...

Judging by the look of the strap, the play of light and shadow on the canteen, and by the play of shadow beneath it- I would say it has a "flat bottom."

Others' mileage will vary...

Thanks Curt, I could see the flat bottom. I'm thinking that it's ...foreign.

Foreign catinieres/vivandieres usually had a keg. A few have shown up on E-bay.
