Hi guys...

I'm doing research for a publication and am looking for information on Confederate hardtack suppliers. Plenty of info (and images) for Federal suppliers -- Mechanical, Stears, Hanks, Childs, Bent, etc. -- but Google as I may I can't find anything on Southern suppliers.

I realize that the biggest supplier to the Southern armies was probably Northern bakeries in the form of appropriated/captured supplies. Plus, I understand that Southern purchasers (in secret or not) sometimes bought hardtack from Northern bakeries. Probably especially true for suppliers in border states like Union Mechanical in Baltimore.

Any help you could offer on names of Southern hardtack suppliers -- and links to images if possible -- would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A.J.

Suggest you read "A Taste for War" by William C. Davis.

I believe you will find that the supply of vittles was very different between the North and the South due to a variety of reasons.

Another good read on this subject is "Confederate Commissary General" by Jerrold Moore published by White Mane Publishing Company in 1996.
