Howdy I play the Jaw Harp and was wondering was it around in those times? i have friends who play guitar and fiddle and sometimes play with them so would it be correct to play around the campfire with them?

Do to their size & ease of playing, there were probably more of them around then fiddles & bajers. ;)

I know this is more a "mainstream" site, but if you care about absurd detail apparently the Jaw Harps of mid-19th century were not as large a diameter and were stouter in appearance...

Sorry, but the thoughts of playing such an instrument makes my jaws hurt. I do know they were played back then and the sound is pretty cool, it's just not for me. I'll keep trying to play the banjo.
