This year one of the living history groups I am a member of (West Side Soldiers Aid Society) is participating as a sponsoring organization in the Wreaths Across America program. What began as one wreath manufacturer's way of honoring our deceased veterans at Arlington National Cemetery (at no profit) has spread to almost 300 locations across the country. Last year, more than 32,000 wreaths were sponsored and placed. This effort involved many, many, many volunteers. I can tell you from last year's participation at Wood National Cemetery (Milwaukee) that the ceremony and placing of the wreaths against the markers was an emotional experience for me, despite the fact that it took place in the middle of a huge snowstorm. Seeing the cemetery after the wreaths were placed was also powerful. I would encourage all to participate in whatever way they can.
