Would ask someone familiar with period Spanish to translate into English these verses of a song as sung by a CW Confederate vet (Crisostome Longoria) that he and his unit sang "as a signal that the Northern forces were near."

His daughter passed the verses on to music researchers (Southern Recording Trip, March 31-June 14, 1939, John A. and Ruby T. Lomax pg. 68 )

La Chinaca

Por hay viene la chinaca
Toda vestida de grig
Preguntandole a los mochos
Donde esta su Emperatris.

Si vien puebla se perdio
No fue falta de valor
Fus por falta de elementos
Para la Confederacion

I haven't listened to the tune yet but will go back into the site (http://memory.loc.gov) to find the recording if it's available there. Longoria "served along the border" so I assume that means in Texas, but no unit name was given.

It's not period Spanish, but Google Translate Gives:

For there comes the chinaca
Any dressed in grig
By questioning the Mocho
Where is your Emperatris.

If winds are lost village
It was not lack of courage
FUS for lack of evidence
For the Confederation

Dosn't all make sense, but a good starting point.

Listen to the old Reb's daughter, Manuela Longoria, sing it:
