My cut and paste abilities are lacking, but the story is located at www.post-gazette.com under "Latest Local News"

Proof positive that morons still exist amongst us.

That's terrible. I don't see how people could do something like that.

The "why's" could probably fill volumes. Nothing else to do...Getting back at "the man"...father didn't play catch with them as kids...there's a million excuses. Wouldn't it be a hoot if a couple of them were caught in the act by some serious reenactors (while the police are far away on some other matter)? Of course, that wouldn't be right, would it?

Thanks for sharing that news, and the link. It is tragic that there are people doing these sorts of things. If these items were taken to sell to collectors, well, I have to scratch my head and wonder how much they truly enjoy history... I say three cheers to the school who replaced the sword from the one monument! Also, I wasn't aware that there were that many acts of vandalism at Gettysburg. Does anyone know how our other battlefields fare?

Am I reading it correctly? Only Union monuments are being vandalized?

I've not tried to link to another page yet.

It should be at this URL:

some of the rangers think it may be ppl who are mad at them for the tree removal on Oak Ridge/Oak Hill. The only problem with that is the fact that the head is missing from the Smith's Battery Artilleryman, which smells of Gburg College. I don't care how they do it, I just want these cretins brought to justice. I cried when I saw the 114th PA zouave on the ground on his side. Makes me want blood...

My guess is that is was probably two or three drunken college guys who thought they were doing cool "stuff." I've known a few of these types during my own collegiate years, and it never ceases to amaze me how stupid they can be and not even know it.

I really do not understand these people. There is just no respect any more for anything sacred. I too and horrified by the audacity that these a**holes have to desicrate monuments such as these.

I can't even stomach the ones that go into cemetaries and tip stones over. I went into the cemetery where my grandmother is burried and cuaght a kid trying to kick over her stone. Luckily the idiot had a vanity plate on his p-o-s car and was arrested later that same day.

I don't know what the solution is, but clearly there is not enough patrol going through the park. Granted it is the largest Civil War park. However if the park service partnered with the college, maybe for sme credit or something, and had the kids patroll the park at night as well as the rangers and volunteers, this kind of vandalism might stop,

Are there going to be funds sets up for the restoration of the monuments and capture of the of the people that did this? I would like to see the reward fund reach such a high level that someone has to talk.

In November of 2000 I caught two Gettysburg College students trying to deface the O'Rourke /140th NY Monument. I was prevented from inflicting harm to them. I turned their plate number into both the NPS and the police. Nothing was done. I was warned that the NPS takes a very dim view of vigalante justice, but was later informed by a ranking employee (whose name and location I can't divulge) that the capture (in any condition) of thse people is important.

I still remember the plate and car, but they have probably graduated.

When all these buttheads go up to the great beyond, the real men of the war will be waiting.I just hope to have a front row view for their punishment.

As for this world,I say some CW justice would work perfectly.Te them up by their thumbs.Shaun,I know that the 114 PA is your passion,so you and your boys can do bayonet drill with those little pukes. As for the rest, bring your clubs, bowie knifes, bats, and anything else you can get and we'll have a good ol' fashion beating.

What is our world comming?

When they're caught, make them fix them, or pay the full amount to have them replaced if need be. Then, also as punishment, make them cut ALL the grass that grows on the entire battlefield with scissors. I bet they would learn a lesson from that.

Hey Bill,
Yes, it's true ... only Union monuments were vandalized ... at least this time around. A friend of mine & I had decided to make a day trip to Gettysburg yesterday, & we arrived about 7:30 AM. As we were traveling down Rte 15 (Steinwehr Ave), I was shocked to notice that the Zouave on top of the 114th PA/Collis's Zouaves monument was toppled, & laying across the wrought iron fence around it. As we passed closer towards town, we saw the park police gathered around the 11th MASS monument, taking photos, & at that point, they had not yet even gathered up the broken sections laying on the ground. Just a short while later, we were in Devil's Den, & I then noticed that the cannoneer on the 4th NY/Smith's Battery monument was missing!! We soon thereafter stopped at the visitors center, & were told that not only was the cannoneer toppled from the monument, but the head was missing as well when the rangers discovered the vandalism!!!
What makes this even more despicable, is that this is the SECOND time in less than 2 years that the 4th NY/Smith's battery monument has been so vandalized!!
Needless to say, we were both pretty upset, & the whole day was kind of dampened by this incident!! The only "good" thing that I can say, is that the bronze zouave was not too very badly damaged, as from what we could see in passing, there was only a section of his base that broke off, as the fall was seemingly "cushioned" from landing across the iron fence!!
It just never ceases to make me SICK as to how callous & uncaring that some people can be!!!

I am currently organizing a fund-raising dinner for the Zouave Monument Fund. It will be held on a Saturday evening in Gettysburg. There will be a raffle, a silent auction, period music, and at least 2 prominent speakers on Gettysburg topics. I am shooting for early this April, as I am going to check on banquet room avalibility tomorrow afternoon.

More info will be posted as it develops, and a website will be forthcoming.

Here is a story from the Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg. This has a picture of Smith's battery monument. It pains me to think that their are people who would desecrate a place like Gettysburg, It is exactly like vandalizing a cemetery.

I know that our friend Shaun Grenan is taking the lead, and good on him, for raising funds to restore the 114th ZouZou. Does anyone know if there is a unit who represents Smith's NY Battery in the field that is going to take the lead on the same for that monument?

With the coming casino, I would not at all be surprised if this doesn't increase in the future. The town will be flooded with people that are going to Gettysburg for any other reason than what had transpired there.

Truly sickening.

maybe if the cops can be convinced that the pro-casino forces caused the damage we can kill 2 birds with one stone...

As for the findraiser, here's some details.

It will be a fundraising dinner with a raffle, silent auction, and 2 speakers on CW topics. I am shooting for an early April date, but have a lot of leg-work to do this coming week. I have to get to Harrisburg to incorporate as a non-profit organization, and get a tax-exempt ID number, as well as all sorts of stuff that I'm pretty sure I'm too stupid to understand, but will sure as he!! try!

Also, the funds we raise will not just go to the 114th PA monument. 1/3 of anything we take in will go to the 11th Mass Infantry & 4th NY Battery monuments.

$30,000 REWARD

Monument vandalism prompts Friends to establish reward

Gettysburg, PA (Feb. 22, 2005)—The Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg has established a $30,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the recent monument vandalism at Gettysburg National Military Park. The Friends’ reward is being offered in addition to any money offered by Adams County Crime Stoppers.

To establish the reward, the Friends teamed with the Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum Foundation, the Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides and the Gettysburg Civil War Round Table.

“We are devastated by this vandalism, and we’ve heard from people all over the country who are eager to help find the people responsible,” said Friends’ Chair of the Board Barbara J. Finfrock. “The monuments were placed on these fields—as testaments to bravery and sacrifice—by the soldiers who fought here, and we are honored to stand with our partners to seek justice.”

Three monuments were severely vandalized last week: the 11th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry monument, the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry monument and the 4th New York battery (Smith’s battery) monument.

Anyone with information should call Gettysburg National Military Park at 717-334-0909 or the Adams County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-869-8057. Callers may remain anonymous.

It is the Friends’ mission—on behalf of all generations of Americans—to honor, support, protect and enhance the resources associated with the Gettysburg National Military Park, the Battle of Gettysburg and the Eisenhower National Historic Site.
