Two Military Executions

I just read this short story and have no idea what happened. If you have read it, can you help me understand how the same guy got executed twice. i am completely baffled! thank you!

I just read it. I'd say it's a ghost story about revenge. Or "what goes around comes around."

The same guy doesn't get executed twice. In the first execution, Lieut. Dudley is responsible for the execution (undeservedly, most would think) of Pvt. Greene. So Greene is dead, and Dudley is alive.

In the second "execution," Lieut. Dudley is killed by a freak accident, a stray bullet from the distant battle. However, the implication is that the ghost or some supernatural version of Pvt. Greene is present on the scene and caused the death, as revenge for the way Lieut. Dudley treated him.

that makes sense now. i did not realize that it was Dudley shot the second time. thanks!
