Gallery of Wetplate Images by Bob Szabo

This Gallery is a collection of images that I started posting as I learned the wetplate process. I am still learning and hope that I will continue to learn and improve my skills for as long as I do wetplate. My special thanks to John Coffer, Mark Osterman, Bill Dunniway, Clovis Davis, Wayne Pierce, and Ray Morgenweck for giving a great amount of help.

After trying unsuccessfully for a few hours to come up with a good image I finally figured out what my problem was. I was only getting an image in a few areas on the plate and the image was a lot better on the edge where the collodion was thicker. It was the collodion at fault. I may have mixed it improperly (but dont think so, I was VERY careful when measuring all my chemicals) or it may have been the ether I used. The collodion was drying before I got it in the Silver Bath. I added 50 mL of alcohol and then after some improvement I added 50mL more and this is what I came up with. Christina did real well considering the 1 minute exposure time. It was also a very overcast day and there were lots of trees around to block out the light.

This image was taken very late in the day with some sunlight shining through the trees. It created a stange lighting effect. I have to admit I not only cropped this image but did some major retouching with Photoshop. While processing the plate I must have lost track of which side of the glass the image was on and put a lot of major scratches on it. I will have to be more careful in the future. Exposure was 30 seconds. The next image I post will be with a new batch of Collodion and I hope the quality will improve and the exposure times decrease.
