The barn on the Roulette Farm

"Before us is a house and a large barn. I was told that the farm belonged to a man named Roulette. The ground we are advancing on rises from all directions towards a point just beyond Roulette's house, where it forms an elevation unworthy of the name ridge. At the foot of this elevation, and perpendicular to our advance, runs a common lane, which the action of rains or other causes have worn to a poor substitute for a trench. The elevated ground is a cornfield."
